Meet Dean Fulford, Stratford’s Leadership Development Practice Lead

by: Stratford Group Ltd.

As managers and executives at Stratford, we’ve led departments, divisions and whole organizations through growth and change. We have the “stars and scars” to offer meaningful, practical guidance or serve hands-on if that’s required.

Beyond our credentials, what sets us apart are the values we share and the ways we work. Every member of our team has a passion for giving back and helping organizations reach their goals. It’s why clients often tell us that when they met our people, they knew they wanted to do business with us.

To help you get to know us a little better, we sat down with some of our team members and interviewed them on everything from professional experience and obstacles to extracurricular activities and playlist recommendations. We thought you may appreciate seeing the personal side of our team through their shared personal insights, recommendations and hobbies.

The next team member we’d like to introduce you to is Dean Fulford, Leadership Development Practice Lead at Stratford.

🎵 What do you like to listen to while working?

I put my music on shuffle (using my library, old school) – and let it go!

Do you have any recommendations?

    • American Idiot – Green Day
    • Joshua Tree – U2
    • Anything by Blue Rodeo
    • Anything by Barenaked Ladies

A new artist I love and would recommend are The Beaches. I saw them live earlier this year and they bring it big time!

📚 What are your favourite business books, podcasts, and blogs?

Favourite books would be:

I also subscribe to Seth Godin’s blog, there are a lot of great business tips there!

🌟 Who are you most influenced by?

    1. The authors listed above give great influence to my leadership direction.
    2. Barack Obama taught me humility and poise.
    3. My family has taught me a lot about communication.
    4. And lastly I have learned so much about how to lead in challenging times by observing some of the great managers I’ve had the pleasure of working with: John Hayden, Mike D’Amico and Jim Roche.

📝What is one piece of advice you find yourself constantly sharing with your clients?

Focus on your own circle of influence.

🙋‍♂️How do you add value to your clients?

Using comprehensive listening and keeping consistent communications, I am able to help my clients identify the most important and impactful action that they can take – right now – that they are ready for.

👀 What do you think makes Stratford unique?

We have such an amazing blend of talent and experience around the ‘office’. This allows us to not only learn from the past, but to combine different expertise and perspectives when problem solving. We are able to offer the most unique and creative solutions to make huge impacts on our clients and the lives of the people that make up their organizations.

🤝 What is your favourite type of client engagement?

I really don’t have a favourite!

I enjoy learning about each organization and what makes them unique. And of course, what they perceive as the obstacle standing in the way of their organization reaching its maximum potential.

Do you sit on any boards or volunteer?

I am part of a sponsor group for a new Syrian refugee family, and have recently been volunteering with Ottawa Shooting Stars basketball club.

🎸 What are some of your favourite past times?

Music. I really enjoy playing guitar and listening for new releases from any artist.

I also enjoy sports. I play golf and hockey, and workout regularly.

🍿Any recommended movies or TV programs?

With evening activities being very limited over the last couple months, I’ve been making ground on Netflix series! My top favourites so far would be:

    • Ozark
    • Unorthodox
    • Dead to Me
    • Living with Myself

Also, an amazing movie I finally watched was JoJo Rabbit.

👩‍💻 Any recommendations on people to follow on their LinkedIn or Twitter accounts?

I would recommend Liane Davey and Simon Sinek – for news and great insights.

I have to follow Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show to get my light-hearted moments of the day.

⛰️ What’s one of the biggest obstacles you’ve had to overcome as it relates to your career?

Understanding that the greatest learnings come in the most difficult times.

📣 Do you have any favourite quotes?

“It is what it is”

I realize this has been part of Jerry Seinfeld’s stand-up, but this can really ground you quickly. You cannot dwell on the past occurrences and things that are outside of your control.

What GIF best describes you?

🤔 If there is one thing you hope your clients gain from working with you, what would you want it to be?

Not only will you accomplish what you see as most important and impactful to your team, but you can have a lot of fun and collaboration getting there.

We look forward to introducing you to others here at Stratford and we’d love the chance to get to know you better too. If you’d like to connect with Dean or other members of the Stratford team, please reach out. We’d love to hear from you.
